Special TEFL Korea projects

Korea is an oriental country, which is fast developing economically. ESL Jobs in Korea are very lucrative as the schools pay well to their teachers. A TEFL certified teacher can also teach in the language schools and for private organizations in Korea where they will be expected to train the adults. Certain sepciafic criteria has to be fullfilled to become an ESL teacher in Korea. One has to be a native speaker with a degree, experiences are always preferred and the teachers has to have an accredited TEFL certificate. The ESL jobs in Korea are mostly in the cities which are cosmopolitan in nature and has all western amenities and facilities. The schools along with the salary also gives free accommodation to the teachers and other facilities like paid vacation and reimbursement of flight fares.

I personally feel there is more info on Thailand than Korea. So ATI admin guys..you may work on this..cheers..

Hello Everybody! I’ve been searching near and far for information regarding American Tesol Institute’s Special Thai-Korea Project. While I have read from some posters that the company and the course seem legit, I do have some questions regarding the 4 month job placement after the course. It seems like you don’t get to choose where in Korea, or at which school you work at. Is this true? This leads me to believe that the job placements are in places/schools that nobody wants to live/work at. Any info or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

I have chosen to teach English because the more people who use the same language, the better the world can communicate. I chose this course, because it offered time in and before class begins.

My main motivation for taking the course is to reinforce the skills necessary for teaching English and to build confidence in my teaching ability. I don’t have any formal teaching experience and I feel that course will greatly aid me in the future.

I love working with people (special reference to children). They should avail proper education and I would like to teach them English as second language.

I love language and have always wanted to live abroad. I am a writer and actress and improve performer/teacher, so I am eager to apply these skills to a class room setting. I am excited to spend my days engaged, teaching and learning, instead of sitting behind a desk 60 hours a week! I also love children.

I love to travel, when I was in China, particularly Macao, I noticed mass can understand English. I plan to share what I have been taught with them and to the people of other countries. I plan to visit China.

I chose the course so that I would be prepared to teach English when I would travel to Korea. Since I have no former teaching experience, I thought it would teach me how to be a more effective instructor.

I have taught EFL in Korea for the previous two years. However, I have no formal teacher training. I wanted to get some official training experience and also know that this certificate will look good on my resume.

The TESOL course at Chiang Mai was fine. I loved that ATI took us out on the 1st night to the Chiang Mai cultural center. What a great way to kick off the course. Also, Teaching at the monk school was amazing.

Toi rock- Communication with Aria at ATI was often confusing. I often asked very direct questions and either didn’t get an answer, or I got a confusing, insufficient response. Especially about Korvia and placement locations in Korea.

The hotel was good, I would have preferred a single room but obviously then the course would have been more expensive. The conference room was good, no problem there. There were tons of tiny bags in the bathroom but once you got used to them they weren’t so bad. We want a pool!!!! The course was excellent, I had a great time, I would definitely recommend to others.

I really enjoyed my time at the ATI training. The staff was awesome, the location was great (but I second the motion for a pool), and the practice teaching experience was invaluable. However, I was under the impression that I was going to a Special Thai-Korea project where I would be learning in thailand about working in Korea. This was not the case. I was quite confused to find out that many of the other trainees weren’t planning on going to Korea at all. Also, there was almost no cultural preparation for Korea but lots for Thailand. Granted, we needed to know about our immediate environment, but we also should have been getting prepped for the year ahead of us in the culture we were expecting to be a part of. I’m not saying that the cultural acclimitization for Thailand was wasteful, it was extremely useful, but when I sign up for a course that’s preparing me to teach in a certain country, I want information on that certain country.

** CLARA ** You’re right, you don’t get to choose which school you go to unless you have the amazing fortune to know someone who knows of an opening and can get your foot in the door. Other than that it’s a crapshoot. You are given a few “location preferences” but ultimately it just comes down to what schools have teachers leaving. It’s not that the schools are places you don’t want to work, in fact, public schools are quite desirable. But often times people come out here with an expiration date and when that comes, the schools need to find new teachers. ATI is a legit program, it was recommended to me by a friend and I will recommend it to you. There are probably more thorough/intense courses you could take but ATI does a good job and you definitely get your money’s worth.

Hope that’s helpful.

I believe you can never stop learning. I chose to do the English teacher training course because I wanted to be better prepared as a teacher as well as experience the other side of it – being a foreigner in another country trying to learn a new language. It builds empathy for my students as well as better equips me as a teacher to understand the structures of my own language.

I have chosen to do the training course it will improve my options when looking for a TESOL position abroad. I do not have a lot of experience on ‘teaching’. The course will allow me to be a better teacher.

I have chosen to do the English Teacher Training course so that I can be prepared to teach English as a second language. I decided about a year and a half ago before I go to graduate school I want to travel around and learn about other cultures and places. Teaching English as a second language was not only a great way to do this but to teach others about my language and culture too. Not to mention I think teaching is also a great way to learn about myself and how I might handle situations.

I have chosen this course to access different cultures and traditions around the world. I feel that you get the best understanding of a country by working within it with the native population. I feel the knowledge of English is an important thing for many countries to aid development of trade and commerce and I believe I can contribute to this.

I think a lot of teaching is intuitive but that it is also very important to receive training in order to gain skills and confidence to teach English to the speakers of other languages. I hope to learn about various helpful activities that I can use with my students and receive feedback that will make me a better student. Although I have taught other languages, I have never taught English as a foreign language and this course will be very helpful.

I wanted to do a course in teaching English for the experience. I have never taught before and I am looking forward to the in class practice. I also would like to feel more prepared for when I go to Korea to teach there. I believe this course will help very much. I also see it as an opportunity to be in a community of people that are like-minded and appreciate travelling as well as have a passion for engaging others. I also appreciate the fact that I will be observed and feedback will be given as I would like to become a better teacher as time goes on. Also who could miss the opportunity to live in Thailand for almost one month?

I would love to share my language with others and see them learn the language for communication. As someone who speaks several languages I know how great an opportunity it is to be able to communicate in different countries. It is a gift that I am teaching to those who want to learn. Taking an English teacher training course was high in my priority list because I want to able to teach well.

I had the opportunity to volunteer The International Rescue Committee in issues over Refugee resettlement. I was overwhelming inspired and co-facilitated informal ESL workshops for Burmese refugees. Prior to ATI I did HIV/AIDS Education in Washington D.C. I fell in love with the classroom. Education is at the forefront of solving so many problems that we face daily. I am still contemplating how ESL fits in that question however.

First and foremost I wanted to try something new. I have thought about teaching for a while and this fits my lifestyle the most. That means to say that it dose not require 2 to 4 years degree and allows for travel. I feel very passionate about helping people, children in particular, and this course provides the means to do so.

I have chosen to complete the teacher training course so that I can be the most effective teacher possible. While I understand the practical experience is the most important tool, a formal course will help out on the right track. After completion of this course I want to use my skills to teach English in South Korea for at least one year.

I am a teacher of English by profession. I have been teaching for 6 years in my country and now I feel I need something more. I want to develop my teaching and language skills, broaden my mind, have an experience of living in another country, especially Thailand and meet native English speaking people. I think this course is a life changing experience and it will definitely help me with my knowledge of teaching.
